I just moved. You have no idea the massive volume of crap which was housed in that little 950sqft tudor. The wife has WAYYYYY too much junque.
OMG 950 sq. ft.

I think that was the size of my first apt. straight out of college.

You guys call that a house? That's a shack. Or a cottage maybe.

But yeah, I'm always amazed at the fact that we have twice the square footage of the old place and nothing new has been acquired yet the space is filled up. How can that be?

People didn't need a lot of space 100 years ago. Big homes are a last 50 years sort of thing.

You just have more space between piles now.

Mine is taking a CCW class with me in a couple weeks. She is wanting a Ruger LCP.
I need to work on mine. I wonder if they'd let me sit in on her CCW class with her. When I took my CCW, 80% of the people in that room concerned me. I can't believe they hand out permits so fawking easily to yahoos who have no business carrying concealed (although anybody over the age of 21 can carry concealed here now, but with slightly less freedom than CCW holders).

We have been downsizing heavily and gotten rid of a tremendous amount of stuff. Next up is the kitchen. We are going to get rid of all the wedding gift items that are never used.

Same. We actually just left the stuff we didn't use (including our counter top microwave) for the tenant.

We rented a 10 yard dumpster the last time we moved just for this very purpose.

So did the attic ever get finished?
Yep. I'll try and get some pics of the finished product soon if I can.

It's all floored out in the middle. We gained the extra height by using 1X3's (I think) that are screwed into the floor joists straight down from above, every screw is countersunk about halfway into the 1X3. Then plywood on top.

No blocking needed, very sturdy so far. Already moved a bunch of stuff up there.

:puzzled: My grandparents lived in a 3,000+ SF house built in 1912 in Barre, VT. The stair and banister system in that house is a work of art. Lots of old houses in the north east built at the turn of the century and before are substantial. Lots of post and beam construction. My parents raised us in a circa 1800 post and beam constructed farm house that was at least 2500SF. It had massive timbers throughout w/ the original wide plank flooring. It was an awesome house.

The west wasn't nearly as civilized at that time and they built what they could - small, shitty houses.

Those were wealthy people's homes when they were built. Don't kid yourself, it wasn't the average factory worker's lodgins.
